What is a pilar cyst?
Pilar cysts (also called trichilemmal cysts) are benign, fluid- or keratin-filled lumps that most often develop on the scalp. They are generally smooth, firm, and slow-growing. While they are not cancerous, removal is often sought for comfort, repeated inflammation/infection, or cosmetic reasons.

What to expect — the removal procedure
Every patient is different, but the typical process includes:
- Consultation: Review of your medical history, examination of the cyst, discussion of options and consent.
- Local anaesthetic: The area is numbed with a local anaesthetic so you should feel minimal discomfort.
- Excision & removal: The Nurse Practitioner removes the cyst using a small incision and careful technique to remove the cyst sac where possible (this reduces recurrence).
- Closure: The wound is closed with fine sutures if needed and dressed. We discuss scar care and follow-up.
- Aftercare: Simple wound care instructions, pain control advice, and a follow-up visit or suture removal appointment if required.
Most procedures are completed in under an hour. We do not remove lesions without first assessing them; any suspicious features will be managed appropriately, which may include biopsy or referral.
Benefits and risks
Benefits: Relief from discomfort, reduced risk of recurrent infection, improved cosmetic appearance.
Risks: As with any minor surgery — bleeding, infection, scarring, or (rarely) cyst recurrence. We minimize risks using sterile technique and clear follow-up.
Pricing & insurance
Costs vary depending on size, number of cysts, and complexity. We provide a procedure estimate at consultation. If you have private insurance, many plans cover minor surgical skin procedures — we can provide receipts for submission.
Frequently asked questions
Will the cyst come back? When the cyst sac is fully removed recurrence is unlikely, but no procedure is 100% guaranteed.
Is it painful? Local anaesthetic is used; you may feel pressure but typically little to no pain during the procedure. Mild discomfort afterward is normal and manageable with over-the-counter pain relief.
How soon can I return to work? Most people return to regular activities within a day or two, depending on the size and location of the excision. We give individualized guidance.
